Hardware Engineering Program Manager

Charm Industrial

San Francisco, US · Full-time · $180,000 – $240,000

About this role

Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. Charm is looking for a Hardware Engineering Program Manager to lead development efforts for next generation pyrolyzers, from prototype through production.

You’ll work cross-functionally across engineering, operations, facilities, supply chain, and test engineering teams. Define and track critical program milestones and metrics while managing business and technology risks. Establish clear priorities for team members to drive progress.

We’re expanding our team of ambitious, creative, hands-on, forward-thinking humans with over a hundred employees across San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. We value psychological safety, collaboration, calculated risks, and learning from mistakes pinned to the wall. Everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work.

Join us in 2024 to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground. We’ve scaled to thousands of tons with customers like Stripe, Shopify, and Microsoft. Come help reverse climate change—gigatons or bust!

Requirements

  • At least 7+ years of experience
  • Excited about joining a startup and a chance to pivot into climate
  • Doer with a strong sense of ownership—relentlessly drive progress forward, not just note-taker, risk manager, or taskmaster
  • Experience completing at least one full hardware development cycle in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience interfacing with mechanical, electrical, software, finance, supply chain, and operations teams, tracking dependencies
  • Clear understanding of the critical path and ability to articulate priorities and the why behind them
  • Depth of experience developing detailed schedules and tracking in software like JIRA
  • Strong organization and communication skills with a desire to improve processes

Responsibilities

  • Bring context and a holistic perspective to cross-functional teams to ensure they’re working around the right set of requirements and constraints
  • Track key metrics such as $/Tonne of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and CDR produced per day, evaluating prioritization based on largest impact
  • Support teams in breaking down major program milestones into individual projects with deliverables and schedules, mitigating risks from hardware development background
  • Proactively identify initiatives likely to fail and develop alternative plans and solutions with teams
  • Create clarity, alignment, and communication around key decisions affecting program outcome
  • Implement new processes for efficiency and visibility, such as change management systems, phase gate reviews, status tracking, and decision documents
  • Occasional travel (about once per month) to our Colorado office

Benefits

  • Psychological safety and collaboration
  • Calculated risks with learning from mistakes
  • Unique backgrounds and perspectives valued
  • Work on reversing climate change at scale
